English is the common language, and is the language of business, government, and the medium of instruction in schools.

Singapore English is based on British English, and forms of English spoken in Singapore range from Standard Singapore English to a pidgin known as “Singlish“. Singlish is heavily discouraged by the government.

=>Chinese: Chinese Singaporeans or Singaporean Chinese (Chinese: simp. 新加坡华人, trad. 新加坡華人, pin. Xīnjiāpō Huárén, Cantonese jyutpingsan1gaa1po1 waa4 jan4) are people of full or partial Chinese – particularly Han Chinese – ethnicity who hold Singaporean nationality. As of 2011, Chinese Singaporeans constitute 74.1% of Singapore’s resident population – approximately three out of four Singaporeans – making them the largest ethnic group in Singapore.

=>Malay: Malays in Singapore (Malay: Melayu Singapura; Jawi:ملايو سيڠاڤورا) are defined by the Singaporean government and by intellectuals in the country using the broader concept of the Malay race, akin to the Malaysian definition.[1] Although the Malays have inhabited the area that is now Singapore since the 17th century AD, most of the Malays in Singapore today are immigrants from Indonesia and Malaysia since 1945 and their descendents.[2]

=>Indian: Singaporean Indians—defined as persons of South Asian paternal ancestry—form 9% of the country’s citizens and permanent residents, making them Singapore’s third largest ethnic group after Chinese and Malays. Among cities, Singapore has one of the largest Overseas Indian populations.

=>Eurasians: The community of Eurasians in Singapore is descended from Europeans who intermarried with local Asians. Their ancestry can be traced to emigrants of countries that span the length and breadth of Europe, although Eurasian migrants to Singapore in the 19th century came largely from other colonies in Asia, such as British Malaya in particular Malacca and Penang; Chittagong and Goa in India; the Dutch East Indies andFrench Indochina. They form a distinct group from more recent immigrants and expatriates of European descent.
